I recently attended a very interesting seminar about fire safety. A friend had invited my husband and I and another couple to attend this meeting, and receive a free chinese buffet dinner at one of our favorite restaurants. I really wanted to turn her down, but she insisted that we go, and that she had asked many times if there was any catch and if they were going to try to sell us something.



The seminar was very informative concerning fire safety. We watched a video showing how quickly a fire can consume an area, then discussed some precautions we should take in our own homes. Interestingly enough, just a few months ago, my eight year old son drew up a fire safety plan for the family, and then they practiced going out his window about 20 times. Even our Jackrat, Edmond, enjoyed this "game".



The number one cause of fires according to statistics is electrical in nature. Anything electrical can potentially be a fire hazard. It is recommended that you unplug all small appliances when not in use, and things such as blow dryers, etc. Also, you should check your junk drawers. Keep batteries separated and stored in the refrigerator. Steel Wool is also very flammable. Make sure you keep ducts and outlets dust, dirt, and lint free.



Keep your fire extinguisher by your bed. We have always kept ours out in the garage. But it makes sense that you will not have time to run to the garage to get the fire extinguisher during the night if your house was to catch on fire. Also remember to monthly turn your extinguisher upside down and shake it up.

Exercise Some Common Sense

I recently read a news article where a 17 year old girl was sexually assaulted at a city park at 10:00 PM. She was walking or jogging alone and was nearing the parking lot where her car was parked when she was assaulted. First of all, a 17 year old should not be out walking at a city park after dark. And she definitely shouldn't have been alone after dark at a park like that! I am all for exercise, but when I read or hear of such incidents, my mind is absolutely boggled. I live in a town similar to "Mayberry", but I would not go to our park alone after dark to exercise! It is time we wake up and quit thinking "it won't happen to me"! It is time we start using some common sense and not place ourselves in situations where bad things could easily happen to us! Like I said, I am all for exercise. And it is our right and privilege to be able to walk or jog at our city park. But when we do so, we should take some precautions. First we should walk or jog with a friend, but if that is not possible we should go in the day time and let somebody know where we are going and what we are doing. Then we should carry some form of protection...PREPAREDNESS MATTERS!
